What is a Bridal Session and Should I Schedule One?

When I’m meeting with a client during a consultation call, I will go over all that is included in my various wedding packages. One of the services I offer is the option for a bridal session. More often than not, my clients are unsure of what that is. So I’m here to help you answer the question, “What is a bridal session, and should I schedule one with my photographer?”

Where does the term “bridal session” come from?

Historically, a bridal session comes from the tradition of royalty dressing up in their wedding attire for pre-ceremony portraits. These are then depicted in oil paintings. Nowadays, bridal sessions are beautifully curated and can be separately scheduled from the wedding day. It is an exclusive photoshoot specifically tailored to the bride. A bridal session is the perfect opportunity to relish in such a once-in-a-lifetime moment in an unhurried, creative environment. This setting allows you to create some beautiful, editorial images. You will want to print them out to have to look back on forever.

Why should I schedule a bridal session?

While not overly common, bridal sessions are beneficial for many reasons. It is a great opportunity to try your wedding dress on with all the accessories. This allows for any changes to be made before the real thing! It also allows you more time to get your portraits done in a stress-free environment. We can be more creative to play with lighting and locations. We can enjoy having your portraits done without worrying about a timeline.

When should I schedule my bridal session?

Most brides schedule their bridal session 1-2 months out from the wedding day. However, you can schedule it after your wedding day or even morning of!

I always recommend doing your editorial bridals the same day as your hair and makeup trial. (Two birds, one stone!) You’re already getting all dolled up, trying out full glam. You might as well get some beautiful pictures while you’re at it! Beyond getting some beautiful imagery, having your bridal session done at the same time as your hair and makeup trial is beneficial. It is the perfect opportunity to build confidence. Additionally, it ensures that your vision and all the pieces are coming together beautifully.

For your bridal session, the options are endless. You can choose whether you want to do them outside with an epic view of the mountains, or inside a studio for a more polished look. It really is up to you! I always recommend bringing your wedding day shoes to break them in. Also, consider a cathedral veil for extra drama.

If this sounds like your vibe but opting to add on a bridal session doesn’t work with your schedule, not to worry. Let’s add in 15-20 minutes during your wedding day timeline to get them done!

Today, I’m sharing some recent bridals taken at The Greenhouse at Arrows Farm, which is a beautiful venue located just outside of Raleigh. The owner, Jessica typically lets her horses run around the pasture during wedding receptions. However, she will also bring them out for fun photoshoots like this one.

Meet your photographer

I’m a North Carolina-based wedding and elopement photographer and videographer, always ready to pack a bag for wherever your love takes you. Photography became my passion after losing my dad and realizing how much I wished I had more recent memories of him to look back on. That’s why I do what I do: to preserve the love, laughter, and connection in a way that feels as warm and sentimental as sunshine itself.

Your memories deserve to be captured & remembered. That’s what I’m here for.
